RiffWise — Phrase Studio Guide

How to bring a course’s licks and riffs into RiffWise
Meatpacking Music · Version 7 · Beta · November 2026

Overview

Phrase Studio brings a course’s licks and riffs into RiffWise. It reads them from the course’s files, you check them by ear, and it saves them as lessons.

It is open to administrators for now.

The steps

  1. Choose the course.
  2. Set the instructor and rights, and add the files.
  3. Check each phrase in the table, and listen to it.
  4. Press Check, then Save course.
  5. Pin each lick to its jam.

The course and its files

Choose the course in the top row. A new course is made in the admin first.

  • Instructor. Choose a name, or Other… to type a new one.
  • Rights. Private is for the instructor and whoever they entitle. Public is for everyone.
  • Files. Drop the course’s Guitar Pro or MusicXML files, or its folder, onto the box. You can also choose files or a folder.

The files themselves are not kept. Only what is read from them is saved.

Phrases

The table has one row for each phrase it found.

  • The tick at the start of a row includes it. # is its place in the course.
  • Title starts as text from the file. That text may be a riff’s title, or only a label such as “Verse”, so read it.
  • Split. When a file holds several riffs they become separate phrases. Untick split in the file’s heading to keep them as one.
  • Bars, bpm, Pickup, Chords, Notes and Marks are what was read. Marks counts the bends, slides, vibrato and so on.
  • Key is yours to set. RiffWise uses it to name the notes.
  • Jam is the backing track the lick is played over.
  • Lesson page is the address of the lesson on the teacher’s site. In RiffWise, the course’s name links to it.

Preview writes the phrase out at the foot of the page. Press play to hear it at 50, 75 or 100 percent of the written tempo.

Saving

Check works out what saving would change and writes nothing. Each row’s Status then reads new, changed or unchanged.

Save course writes the phrases and their lessons. It stays greyed until you have checked, and any change after that means checking again. Summaries, video links and tags added to a lesson by hand are kept.

Jams

The Jams card lists what each jam’s licks say, to help when you import the jam into TrackWise and choose its form.

A lick’s file covers only the lick. Its bar count, pickup and key signature say nothing about the jam. Its chords are those bars alone, and its tempo may be a practice tempo. The jam’s tempo is checked against the recording in Sync Studio.

Pins

A pin says where a lick falls in its jam: Phrase Bar X = Form Bar Y. RiffWise then loops the written bars in time with the track.

Each lick is written out above its bars, with the form’s bars beneath. A heavy outline marks a bar whose chord differs from the file’s. Only jams verified in Sync Studio are offered here.

  • Until you change it, a pin is the default: the bar the lick lands on = form bar 1.
  • Hear it ↗ opens the lick in RiffWise with its jam on, ready to play.
  • Confirm records that you have heard it. Moving a pin clears that.
  • Default goes back to the default.

Each pin saves as you change it. Students never see whether a pin is confirmed.

Getting around
